La Herradura is an amazing place for musical activities. Not only do we have the Andrés Segovia International Classical Guitar Competition in November each year, already mentioned in a previous post but a host of other events on a weekly and monthly basis.
We have Cuban music on a Monday night, Flamenco on a regular basis and Albert Nuitjen on a Friday night at Las Maravillas Restaurant. Albert is a fine player across many musical genres including an excellent classical guitar repertoire and he has developed a great gig for people of all ages to thoroughly enjoy. There are other events running in the town throughout the year ensuring that we are never short of live guitar music.
La Herradura, Granada Province in Andalucia - A Hive Of Musical Activity!
This post is primarily about a brilliant idea, conceived and organised by Stephen Hill (also mentioned in a previous post). This is a series of classical guitar recitals put on in the La Herradura's fine Centro Civico (Civic Centre) entitled "Maestros De La Guitarra". Stephen's intention is to invite top echelon classical guitar players to La Herradura (Andres Segovia's adopted home) to entertain our local community in this historical place and promote the enjoyment of classical guitar music played by the worlds finest players. Many of the invited players already play guitars made by Stephen.
Recent Talented Classical Guitarists To Grace Our Town
June 2013 - Gabriel Bianco - winner of the 2012 Andres Segovia competition, Gabriel is the first guitarist to take part in Granada’s Festival as a result of winning the Andrés Segovia competition, but also for winning eight prizes in other international competitions in Europe including Vienna (Austria), Tychy (Poland), Koblenz (Germany) and the Guitar Foundation of America Competition (GFA). He has performed as a solo artist in recitals on main stages all around the world - Moscow, Beijing, Bucharest, São Paulo and Poznan, to mention but a few.
Gabriel thrilled us with his performance and has a beautiful touch with his interpretation of his repertoire. I am sure everyone who attended would love to hear him play again.
October 2013 - Gary Ryan - Gary is one of the world's foremost classical guitarists. He captivates audiences with his exceptional virtuosity and creative genius and has won universal acclaim for his formidable blend of flawless technique, profound musical artistry and highly varied concert programmes. In May 2013 Gary was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal College of Music, London by HRH Prince Charles in recognition of his outstanding achievements in the international musical world.
Gary has visited and performed for us previously when he came to pick up his new guitar from Stephen last year. It is hard to articulate the pleasure of listening to a maestro who is in total command of the stage and his instrument. Gary's own compositions are stunning and I for one could listen to a whole concert repertoire of his work. This year he came with Manus Noble and they put on some fascinating own composition duets - excellent musically and very entertaining.
October 2013 - Manus Noble - Manus Noble is one of the most exciting and innovative of today's generation of young guitarists. Both a performer and a composer, Manus studied at the Royal College of Music under Gary Ryan and after graduating with first class honours was awarded a scholarship to do his Masters in Performance at the Royal Academy of Music in 2010, where he also graduated with Distinction in 2012. A multi-award winning guitarist, having performed throughout the UK and abroad, Manus's exciting and varied concerts are in high-demand.
This is also the second time that Manus has performed brilliantly for us and after his solo performance, he performed brilliant duets with Gary as mentioned above.
November 2013 - Giacomo Bigoni is an Italian classical guitarist based in London. Born in 1991, he studied in Italy with Claudio Piastra completing both Bachelor and Masters with Distinction. He moved to London in 2012, obtaining after one year the Artist Diploma in Performance at the Royal College of Music, studying with Carlos Bonell and Gary Ryan.
Giacomo came to collect his new guitar from Stephen and gave us a great recital, he is a technically gifted and very passionate player and I particularly loved his Asturias, beautifully interpreted and executed. I am sure he will be back in the future.
More Guitar Music Coming Up!
We are so blessed here with the amazing range and quality of musical talent. We have another great guitarist to close out 2013, an excellent year of music.
Dale Harris - Saturday 14th December in the Civico Centro. Classical, acoustic, Spanish guitarist-musician and composer Dale Harris was born in London in 1968. He began playing the guitar at the age of four and gave his first solo public performance at age 7. Dale was initially taught by his father and began formal classical lessons in 1981. His formal musical education includes a first class B.A.(Hon) degree, an M.A. in music performance, and in 2004, Dale successfully completed a PhD entitled 'Cryptograms In The Music Of Alban Berg'. In 1998, Dale won 'The Larissa Lovelock Memorial Prize' for classical guitar performance. Dale has studied the classical guitar with John Mills and performed for H.R.H. Prince Phillip The Duke Of Edinburgh and the Archbishop of Canterbury, George Carey.
We are privileged once again to have Dale come back to La Herradura to play for us. He is a very talented classical guitar player and I really enjoy his interpretations. Looks like we are in for another treat this coming Saturday.
